Colombia's Yellow Fever Outbreak Threatens Urban Centers
In early 2025, Colombia declared a national health and economic emergency in response to a severe yellow fever outbreak that has resulted in 74 confirmed cases and 34 deaths since the start of the year. The outbreak, centered in the Tolima region, is the most significant in over two decades and has been exacerbated by climate change and deforestation, which have expanded the habitat of disease-carrying mosquitoes to higher altitudes.

Understanding Yellow Fever
Yellow fever is a viral hemorrhagic disease transmitted primarily by infected mosquitoes, notably Aedes aegypti in urban settings and Haemagogus species in jungle environments. The disease manifests initially with symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, back pain, and muscle aches. While many recover after this phase, approximately 15% of patients enter a more severe stage characterized by jaundice, bleeding, and organ failure. The case fatality rate in severe cases can reach up to 50%. PubMed
The 2025 Outbreak: A Closer Look
The current outbreak has been particularly severe in the Tolima department, accounting for the majority of cases. Other affected regions include Caquetá, Huila, Nariño, Putumayo, and Vaupés. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reported that between late 2024 and early 2025, 61 cases of yellow fever were confirmed in Latin America, with 30 resulting in death.
The resurgence of yellow fever in these areas is attributed to several factors:
-
Climate Change: Rising temperatures have expanded the range of mosquito vectors to higher altitudes, bringing the disease closer to urban centers.
-
Deforestation: Human encroachment into forested areas has increased contact between humans and sylvatic (jungle) mosquito vectors.
-
Urbanization: Rapid urban growth without adequate infrastructure has created breeding grounds for mosquitoes in cities.
Government Response
In response to the outbreak, the Colombian government has implemented several measures:
-
Emergency Declaration: A national health and economic emergency was declared to mobilize resources and coordinate response efforts. Wikipedia
-
Vaccination Campaign: A nationwide immunization campaign aims to vaccinate the entire population within two months. As of mid-April, over 54,000 people have been vaccinated in prioritized municipalities.
-
Travel Regulations: Vaccination cards are now mandatory for travelers to and from high-risk areas to prevent further spread. Wikipedia
Challenges Ahead
Despite these efforts, several challenges persist:
-
Vaccine Hesitancy: Misinformation and distrust in vaccines can hinder immunization efforts.
-
Resource Limitations: Ensuring adequate vaccine supply and distribution logistics, especially in remote areas, remains a significant hurdle.
-
Surveillance: Monitoring and controlling mosquito populations require sustained efforts and community participation.
